TRAX Returned to Shipper (RTO): Why It Happens and What to Do
Why a parcel gets a return status, how it travels back and what buyers and sellers should do next.
What Does "Returned to Shipper" Mean?
If tracking shows "Returned to Shipper" or "RTO" (Return to Origin), TRAX has stopped trying to deliver the parcel. Instead of staying at the local office, it is being sent back to the seller who booked it.
Returns are a normal part of online shopping. An RTO update is disappointing if you are waiting for an order, but knowing why it happened helps you sort it out quickly.
The return keeps its link to the original booking, so you can keep checking it with the same tracking number.
Common Reasons for a Return
A parcel usually goes back to the seller for one of these reasons:
1. Buyer Could Not Be Reached
If the buyer’s phone is off, not answered or cannot be reached when the rider tries to deliver, the parcel may be sent back. We could not confirm how many tries TRAX makes before a return.
2. Buyer Refused the Parcel
If the buyer says no to the parcel at the door, for example because they cancelled the order or do not agree with the price, the rider records a refusal and the parcel goes back.
3. Wrong or Missing Address
A missing house number, an unclear area, the wrong city or a wrong phone number can stop the rider finding you. The parcel may then be returned.
4. Seller Asked for It Back
Sometimes the seller asks for a parcel back before delivery, for example after a double booking, a payment problem or a buyer cancelling.
5. Not Collected From the Office
If a parcel is waiting at a TRAX office for you to collect and nobody comes, it may be sent back. We could not confirm how many days TRAX keeps a parcel before returning it.
How a Return Travels Back
A return goes through the TRAX network, just like a normal delivery, but in the other direction:
Step 1: Sorted at the Local Hub
The parcel is scanned for return at the local hub and grouped with other returns.
Step 2: Sent Back to the Seller’s City
The parcel travels back towards the city it came from. We could not confirm how long this takes. Returns do not move on Sundays or public holidays.
Step 3: Handed Back to the Seller
When the parcel reaches the seller’s city, it is handed back to the seller, who checks the item.
What Should Buyers Do When a Parcel Is Marked RTO?
If your parcel is going back and you did not expect it, act quickly:
- Contact the shop: Contact the shop you ordered from. The shop booked the parcel with TRAX, so it is best placed to ask about the return.
- Check your details: Check your order confirmation. Make sure your phone number and address were typed correctly.
- Ask for it to be sent again: When the parcel is back with the shop, ask them to send it again with the right contact details.
- Check the return rules: Some shops charge for sending a parcel both ways if it came back because nobody answered. Talk to the shop early to protect your refund or replacement.
Need Help Stopping a Return?
